Long Zabuton Sizes and Uses

Comparison of Double, Triple, and Quadruple Length Naga-zabuton sizes

Quadruple Length

The largest Naga-zabuton, with a generous size for stretching out and relaxing.

Made in much the same way as a traditional Futon Mattress (Shikifuton), it can also be used as a compact sleeping mat for occasional use.

Fabric Size: 180 x 85 cm (70.9 x 33.5 in)
Cotton Filling Weight: 4.0 kg (8.8 lb)

Triple Length

A roomy Naga-zabuton with plenty of space for one person to sit, recline, or relax.

It works well on the floor, beside a low table, or as extra cushioning on a sofa, while remaining easier to move than the largest size.

Fabric Size: 150 x 70 cm (59.1 x 27.6 in)
Cotton Filling Weight: 3.0 kg (6.6 lb)

Double Length

The most compact Naga-zabuton size, easy to move and use in different areas of the room.

Suitable for sitting, reclining, or short naps. It can also be folded for use as a pillow, rolled for back support, or placed across a two-seat sofa for extra cushioning.

Fabric Size: 110 x 60 cm (43.3 x 23.6 in)
Cotton Filling Weight: 1.5 kg (3.3 lb)

All zabuton cushions are generously filled with cotton and feel soft and full when new. With regular use, the cotton gradually settles and becomes firmer. This is a natural characteristic of cotton-filled Zabuton.

The listed dimensions refer to the fabric size before filling. Once the cotton is added, the finished dimensions may appear slightly smaller because of the volume of the filling.

Fabric

The outer fabric is made from organic cotton in its natural beige color.

Because the fabric is not bleached, small brown cotton specks may appear on the surface. These are natural parts of the cotton and are harmless to the body.

We use this simple cotton fabric because it works naturally with the organic cotton filling inside the futon.

Blend Cotton

Organic Cotton & Recycled Polyester Blend

This filling combines 70% organic cotton from India with 30% recycled polyester.

The recycled polyester adds resilience while reducing the overall weight of the futon. Compared with the 100% organic cotton option, it feels lighter and slightly more springy, making the futon easier to lift, fold, and move.

Because of its lighter weight and ease of handling, this type of filling is often chosen for spare futons or futons kept for guests in Japan.

The polyester used is Teijin Frontier “High-Bulky ECO,” made using recycled materials including PET bottles.

30% Recycled Polyester

About Flat Dimensions

The listed dimensions are measured from seam to seam while the Zabuton is lying flat and unfilled.

Once the cotton filling is added, the Zabuton gains volume, so the finished length and width become smaller than the listed flat dimensions.

When new, the Zabuton is approximately 5–10 cm (2.0–3.9 in) thick. With use, the cotton gradually settles to around 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in).

Finished size and thickness may vary slightly depending on the amount of filling, temperature, humidity, and use.

Craftsmanship: How We Make a Zabuton

Each Zabuton is made by hand using traditional Japanese futon-making techniques.

  • Layers of cotton are arranged by hand to create an even foundation.
  • The cotton is shaped and distributed carefully so that the filling reaches the edges while providing support at the center.
  • Each corner is filled and shaped by hand to form the final shape of the cushion.
  • After the cotton is inserted, the opening is sewn closed by hand with a blind stitch.

The shape and balance of each Zabuton are adjusted by hand as it is finished.

Care for 100% Cotton Filling

• Do not wash with water at home.
• Air regularly in a dry, well-ventilated place.
• On clear, dry days, air the item outdoors to help release moisture from the cotton filling.
• If outdoor airing is not possible, place it in a well-ventilated room and use a fan or dehumidifier if needed.
• If the outer fabric becomes dirty, gently spot clean the affected area and allow it to dry completely.
• Store only when completely dry, in a well-ventilated place.
• Cotton naturally settles and becomes firmer with use. This is a normal characteristic of cotton-filled bedding.
