Hiba Wood Treatment
This product is treated with natural Hiba wood extract sourced from Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
Using proprietary processing technology, Hiba essence is infused into the material. Hiba extract contains hinokitiol, a naturally occurring compound known for its antibacterial and deodorizing properties.
Compared with untreated products, the Hiba treatment helps maintain freshness while adding the pleasant, forest-like aroma characteristic of Hiba wood.
The natural scent of Hiba is often associated with the relaxing atmosphere of a forest retreat, enhancing the comfort of your living space.
Organic Cotton from India
Cotton batting is a natural fiber with excellent resilience.
With regular care—such as sun-drying on clear days—the absorbed sweat from sleep and indoor moisture evaporate, allowing the futon to regain its fluffiness and ensuring a comfortable sleep.
We use GOTS-certified Desi cotton sourced from India, the world's largest producer of organic cotton. The region's abundant sunshine and ideal growing conditions produce high-quality cotton known for its natural softness, durability, and moisture-absorbing properties.
What is GOTS Certification?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is one of the world's most rigorous certifications for organic textiles.
The certification verifies that every stage of production—from farming and harvesting to processing, manufacturing, and distribution—meets strict environmental and social responsibility standards.
The use of harmful chemicals is tightly controlled, ensuring a safer and more skin-friendly material you can use with confidence.
Natural Cotton from India
Our natural cotton filling is made from Desi cotton grown in India. We use the term “natural cotton” to distinguish it from our organic cotton filling.
Desi cotton is a traditional Indian cotton variety with relatively firm, resilient fibers. These characteristics make it well suited to Japanese futons, which are designed to gradually settle and become firmer with use.
The cotton is prepared for futon making at our workshop in Tokyo and layered by hand when each futon is made.
No wool, polyester, flame retardants, pesticides, or adhesives are added to the filling.
The Characteristics of Unbleached Organic Cotton
Our organic fabric has little brownish dots on it. You will also find the same thing in the cotton filling, which you can see through. They are part of the cotton plant. They are visible because they have not been bleached. Please be assured that it is harmless to the human body.
All manufacturing processes are done in house
We source high-quality raw cotton from India. Classic, heavy-duty machines that have been used for over three generations remove cotton debris and prepare the cotton for use as futon filling. We sterilize the cotton using heat and do not use any chemicals in any of our processes.
We keep a wide variety of cotton fabrics in stock to meet our customers' diverse needs. During busy periods, our skilled artisans produce more than 15 futon mattresses per day. The finished products are then shipped worldwide from our office on the lower floor of the factory.
Our manufacturing process is both streamlined and efficient. By minimizing intermediaries and transportation costs, we are able to offer high-quality products at fair prices.
Clean and Natural Materials
We believe the materials closest to your body should be as natural as possible.
Our cotton filling contains no:
- Insecticides
- Toxic solvents
- Flame retardants
- Hormone-disrupting chemicals
We use heat treatment and mechanical processing rather than chemical treatments whenever possible, preserving the natural qualities of the cotton while ensuring a clean and comfortable product.
Made in Kochi, Japan
This factory is located in a small town surrounded by valleys and green mountains.
The company is located upstream of the Niyodo River, known as one of the clearest rivers in Japan.
All wooden products are made while respecting and preserving the natural environment of Kochi.
Although Kochi Prefecture has an image of seas and rivers, it is one of the most forested prefectures in Japan, with 84% of its land area covered by forests.
This abundance of forests nurtures the clear streams of the Shimanto and Niyodo Rivers, producing a rich natural environment and its bounty.
In-House Craftsmanship
One of the few Japanese manufacturers that integrates all processes in-house — from forest management to lumbering and processing.
The company harvests timber from its own forests and surrounding areas, making effective use of thinned wood from forest maintenance, thereby contributing to the protection of the forest environment.
Hinoki Pillow - Care Instruction
Hinoki pillows can be used for a long time with regular care. Although the pillows cannot be washed with water, the natural insect-repellent and antibacterial properties of hinoki make them easy to maintain.
- Cover: Machine washable.
- Wood filling: Do not wash with water, as this may damage the material, reduce durability, and remove its natural essential oils.
- Remove the cover and air the wood filling in a well-ventilated, shaded area for 24 hours, rotating occasionally to allow even moisture release.
- Short periods of sun drying are also possible.
- Recommended frequency: Once or twice a week in summer, and once a month in winter.
- For long-term storage, keep the pillow in a cool, dry, and airtight place.
When exposed to direct sunlight or high temperatures, the natural oils in hinoki wood may gradually rise to the surface. This is a normal characteristic of the material.
The natural fragrance is gradually released over time. Even when the scent becomes less noticeable, the wood continues to retain its natural properties.
To refresh the fragrance, natural hinoki oil may be applied. Use only 2–3 drops per application, then gently rub to distribute evenly.
