Features

Handcrafted in Tokyo, Japan
Carefully hand-filled with layers of organic cotton
Hand-tufted using traditional Japanese techniques
Made without flame retardants, pesticides, or adhesives
Designed for floor sleeping, tatami mats, and low platform beds

Hand-Stitched Finish

Each Futon Mattress (Shikifuton) is carefully sewn closed by hand after the cotton is layered.

Hand-Tufting

Helps hold the cotton filling in place as it gradually settles with use.

Corner Tie

Helps hold the cotton filling in place near the corners.

Bicolor Option

This Futon Mattress (Shikifuton) can be made with two different fabric colors: Red on one side and Natural Beige on the other. As with our other Futon Mattresses, either side can be used as the sleeping surface.

Silk-Free Option

Silk thread is normally used for the corner tassels and tufting ties because it is strong and resists unraveling.

If you prefer not to use silk, select the Silk-Free option. We will use cotton thread instead.

Please note that cotton thread may loosen or unravel more easily than silk, and the thread color may vary from the product images. This does not affect the function of the futon.

For more details, please see our guide to the Silk-Free option.

GOTS-Certified – Crafted for Comfort

Made from 100% organic cotton and certified by GOTS, this cover is free from harmful chemicals, ensuring a gentle touch on your skin and a sustainable choice for the environment.

Expertly sewn using Japan’s renowned stitching techniques, it offers exceptional durability and a beautifully refined finish. Soft, breathable, and designed for year-round comfort, this cover enhances your sleeping experience while preserving the tradition of Japanese craftsmanship.

Kuriume Red Organic Cotton Fabric

This GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric is one of Futon Tokyo’s original colors. The deep red tone was developed to bring a rich but understated color while keeping the simple texture of the cotton fabric.

The same Kuriume Red fabric is available across many of our products, including Futon Mattresses, Futon Quilts, covers, and other cotton-filled items, with a range of sizes available.

This makes it easy to coordinate several pieces in the same color throughout your futon setup.

Filling

The filling is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.

For larger sizes, such as Queen, our craftspeople carefully layer as many as 30 sheets of cotton by hand, gradually shaping the futon as they work.

We use cotton with a firm, supportive fiber that works well for Japanese futons. The futon feels soft at first, then gradually becomes denser and more supportive with use.

No wool, polyester, flame retardants, pesticides, or adhesives are used in the filling.

Thickness & Natural Compression - Futon Mattress

Cotton futons are soft and fluffy when new, but they naturally settle with use.

A standard Futon Mattress (Shikifuton) is over 10 cm / 4.0 in at the thickest point when new. Over time, it usually settles to around 5 cm / 2.0 in.

This is a natural characteristic of cotton bedding. As the cotton settles, the futon becomes denser, firmer, and more supportive.

Custom Size Available

This futon can be made in custom sizes.

Size Information

Please check the listed measurements carefully before ordering.

Size names such as “Single” or “Double” can vary by country.

For our Futon Mattresses (Shikifutons), the fabric size and finished size are different. Once the cotton filling is added, the futon becomes thicker, and the finished size is usually about 10 cm (4.0 in) smaller than the fabric size.

Numbers in parentheses indicate the finished size after cotton filling is added.

US Full is available for selected futons only.

Care Instructions

After sleeping, fold back or stand up your futon to let the underside air out. This helps prevent moisture from building up underneath.
We recommend using a futon cover to keep your futon clean.
Air out your futon regularly to prevent moisture buildup. When possible, dry it in direct sunlight for about 2 hours on each side.
If outdoor airing is difficult, place the futon in a well-ventilated room so air can circulate around it.
Do not wash with water.
For long-term storage, keep it in a dry place, preferably on an upper closet shelf or raised area.

Please note: If the fabric gets stained, wipe gently with a damp cloth. Avoid beating the futon or jumping on it, as this may damage the cotton filling.

How It’s Made

Each shikibuton is made by the craftspeople in our Tokyo workshop.

From preparing the cotton to layering, shaping, stitching, and tufting, every step is done carefully so the cotton can settle naturally over time.

Futon Mattress (Shikifuton) FAQ

What is a Shikifuton?
A shikifuton is a traditional Japanese futon mattress used for sleeping. It is usually placed on tatami, a futon mat, or another breathable surface, and can be folded or aired out when needed.
Can I use a shikifuton directly on the floor?
Yes, but we recommend using it on tatami, a futon mat, or another breathable surface. This helps reduce moisture buildup underneath the futon.
Do I need a tatami mat?
A tatami mat is not always required, but it is recommended if you use your shikifuton directly on the floor. Tatami helps create a more breathable and comfortable sleeping surface.
Can I use a shikifuton on a bed frame?
Yes, if the bed frame has good airflow. Slatted bed frames usually work better than solid boards, because cotton bedding needs ventilation.
How thick is a shikifuton when new?
Our standard shikifuton is over 4 in / 10 cm at the thickest point when new. Cotton futons are very fluffy at first and naturally settle with use.
Will the futon become thinner over time?
Yes. Cotton futons gradually compress as they are used. A standard shikifuton usually settles to around 2 in / 5 cm over time. This is a natural characteristic of cotton bedding.
Does compression mean the futon is defective?
No. Natural compression is normal for cotton futons. As the cotton becomes denser, the futon becomes firmer and more supportive.
Is a cotton shikifuton soft or firm?
It feels soft and fluffy when new, then gradually becomes firmer as the cotton settles. Compared with many modern mattresses, a shikifuton gives a simple, supportive feel.
What should I do if I want a softer sleeping surface?
If you prefer a softer feel, we recommend adding a futon topper. A topper can add extra comfort while keeping the simple structure of a Japanese futon.
What is the difference between fabric size and finished size?
The fabric size and finished size are different. After cotton filling is added, the futon becomes thicker and the finished size is usually about 4 in / 10 cm smaller than the fabric size.
How should I choose the right size?
Please check the actual measurements carefully before ordering. Size names such as “Single” or “Double” can vary depending on the country.
Can I fold and store the shikifuton?
Yes. A shikifuton can be folded, although larger sizes may be more difficult to handle. Folding also helps air circulate when the futon is not in use.
How often should I air out my futon?
We recommend airing out your futon regularly to prevent moisture buildup. When possible, dry it in direct sunlight for about 2 hours on each side.
What if I cannot dry it outside?
If outdoor airing is difficult, stand the futon up in a well-ventilated room. Try to expose the side that was facing the floor so moisture can escape.
Can I wash the shikifuton?
No. Please do not wash the shikifuton with water. If the fabric gets stained, wipe it gently with a damp cloth.
Should I use a futon cover?
Yes. We recommend using a futon cover to keep your shikifuton clean. The cover can be removed and washed more easily than the futon itself.
How should I store it for a long time?
For long-term storage, keep the futon in a dry, well-ventilated place. A higher closet shelf or raised area is recommended to help avoid humidity.
Are flame retardants or adhesives used?
No flame retardants, insecticides, adhesives, or other residual chemical treatments are added to the cotton filling.
