Zabuton Sizes and Uses

Comparison of Hattan Size, Meisen Size, and 50 cm Square Zabuton

Hattan Size

The largest of the three sizes, with extra room for comfortable floor seating. A good choice for relaxing, meditation, or when you prefer a more generous sitting area.

Fabric Size: 63 x 59 cm (24.8 x 23.2 in)
Cotton Filling Weight: 1.3 kg (2.9 lb)

Meisen Size

A classic Japanese Zabuton size and the most versatile of the three. Suitable for everyday floor seating, meditation, or adding a traditional Japanese cushion to your living space.

Fabric Size: 59 x 55 cm (23.2 x 21.7 in)
Cotton Filling Weight: 1.0 kg (2.2 lb)

50 cm Square

A compact size that works well on dining chairs, benches, or small seating areas. It is also easy to move and use as a small floor cushion or nap pillow.

Fabric Size: 50 x 50 cm (19.7 x 19.7 in)
Cotton Filling Weight: 0.65 kg (1.4 lb)

The listed dimensions refer to the fabric size before filling. Once the cotton is added, the finished dimensions may appear slightly smaller because of the volume of the filling.

These are general guidelines. The best size depends on how and where you plan to use the Zabuton.

Nagomi Fabric

Nagomi Navy

Nagomi is a woven fabric with a subtle, slightly irregular texture inspired by traditional Japanese textiles.

It is slightly thicker and more substantial than many of our patterned fabrics, giving it a durable, comfortable feel.

Nagomi is used across many of our cotton-filled products, making it easy to coordinate Futon Mattresses, Futon Quilts, Zabuton, pillows, and other items in the same fabric.

Natural Cotton from India

Our natural cotton filling is made from Desi cotton grown in India. We use the term “natural cotton” to distinguish it from our organic cotton filling.

Desi cotton is a traditional Indian cotton variety with relatively firm, resilient fibers. These characteristics make it well suited to Japanese futons, which are designed to gradually settle and become firmer with use.

The cotton is prepared for futon making at our workshop in Tokyo and layered by hand when each futon is made.

No wool, polyester, flame retardants, pesticides, or adhesives are added to the filling.

Craftsmanship: How We Make a Zabuton

Each Zabuton is made by hand using traditional Japanese futon-making techniques.

  • Layers of cotton are arranged by hand to create an even foundation.
  • The cotton is shaped and distributed carefully so that the filling reaches the edges while providing support at the center.
  • Each corner is filled and shaped by hand to form the final shape of the cushion.
  • After the cotton is inserted, the opening is sewn closed by hand with a blind stitch.

The shape and balance of each Zabuton are adjusted by hand as it is finished.

About Flat Dimensions

The listed dimensions are measured from seam to seam while the Zabuton is lying flat and unfilled.

Once the cotton filling is added, the Zabuton gains volume, so the finished length and width become smaller than the listed flat dimensions.

When new, the Zabuton is approximately 5–10 cm (2.0–3.9 in) thick. With use, the cotton gradually settles to around 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in).

Finished size and thickness may vary slightly depending on the amount of filling, temperature, humidity, and use.

Care for 100% Cotton Filling

• Do not wash with water at home.
• Air regularly in a dry, well-ventilated place.
• On clear, dry days, air the item outdoors to help release moisture from the cotton filling.
• If outdoor airing is not possible, place it in a well-ventilated room and use a fan or dehumidifier if needed.
• If the outer fabric becomes dirty, gently spot clean the affected area and allow it to dry completely.
• Store only when completely dry, in a well-ventilated place.
• Cotton naturally settles and becomes firmer with use. This is a normal characteristic of cotton-filled bedding.
