Features

These are the same Japanese hinoki wood chips used as filling in our handmade Hinoki Pillows.

The chips are carefully polished with rounded edges, giving them a smooth, gentle feel. A small amount of natural oil may sometimes appear on the surface. This is naturally present in the hinoki wood.

Available sizes:

  • 500 g (1.1 lb)
  • 1 kg (2.2 lb)
  • 2 kg (4.4 lb)

Please note: This product includes hinoki wood chips only. Pillow covers and fabric cases are not included.

Hinoki, or Japanese cypress, has a fresh, distinctive woody scent. The fragrance will gradually become lighter over time depending on the environment.

The chips can be used in a bath, placed in a bowl or ceramic dish, or kept in a bedroom, closet, or other living space. A few drops of hinoki essential oil can also be added when you would like to refresh the scent.

Hiba Wood Treatment

This product is treated with natural Hiba wood extract sourced from Aomori Prefecture, Japan.

Using proprietary processing technology, Hiba essence is infused into the material. Hiba extract contains hinokitiol, a naturally occurring compound known for its antibacterial and deodorizing properties.

Compared with untreated products, the Hiba treatment helps maintain freshness while adding the pleasant, forest-like aroma characteristic of Hiba wood.

The natural scent of Hiba is often associated with the relaxing atmosphere of a forest retreat, enhancing the comfort of your living space.

Made in Kochi, Japan

This factory is located in a small town surrounded by valleys and green mountains.

The company is located upstream of the Niyodo River, known as one of the clearest rivers in Japan.

All wooden products are made while respecting and preserving the natural environment of Kochi.

Although Kochi Prefecture has an image of seas and rivers, it is one of the most forested prefectures in Japan, with 84% of its land area covered by forests.

This abundance of forests nurtures the clear streams of the Shimanto and Niyodo Rivers, producing a rich natural environment and its bounty.

In-House Craftsmanship

One of the few Japanese manufacturers that integrates all processes in-house — from forest management to lumbering and processing.

The company harvests timber from its own forests and surrounding areas, making effective use of thinned wood from forest maintenance, thereby contributing to the protection of the forest environment.

Natural Oil on Hinoki Chips

Natural oil may appear on the surface of some hinoki chips. This is naturally present in the wood and is not a defect.

How to care

  • Pillow sleeve and pillowcases are washable, however, the wood cubes cannot be washed in water.
  • It is highly recommended to remove the pillow sleeve  or case from the hinoki wood cubes and air dry it in the shade for one full day in a well-ventilated place. Turning the pillow over periodically will allow the moisture absorbed by the chips to be fully released. (You can also dry them in the sun for short periods of time). A good rule of thumb is to do this once or twice a week in the summer and once or twice a month in the winter.
  • Wood cubes should not be washed in water. It will accelerate deterioration. Also, the essential oil, which is the source of the fragrance, will be lost. The natural ingredients contained in hinoki allow for hygienic use.
  • For long-term storage, it is recommended that the product be stored in a cool, dark, and airtight place.

Caution in use

  • Because hinoki is a natural material, the essential oil components of hinoki may seep through to the surface when exposed to direct sunlight or placed in high room temperatures.
  • The essential oil that is the source of the fragrance is gradually released.
Even if the scent is no longer felt from the hinoki pillow, the effect of the essential oil is still being released. If you wish to enjoy the fragrance for a longer period of time, please add natural hinoki oil. Since the natural oil has a strong fragrance, 2 to 3 drops per application is sufficient. After applying the oil, rub it well and blend it into the pillow.
  • Hinoki wood may discolor or chip over time. Such cubes should be removed and disposed of as combustible waste. Additional filling (sold separately) can be replenished for a fresh hinoki pillow.
